Erewhon Cereals: Allergen-Free, Gluten-Free

Erewhon Cocoa Crispy Brown Rice

Recently, I had the pleasure of revisiting Erewhon Cereals’ (now owned by Attune Foods)  line of products that I had discovered fifteen years ago.  Diagnosed at six months, you can imagine the challenge of finding our child the right allergen-free foods in order to help her grow and to thrive. Erewhon was one of the first cereals I discovered at our local health food store. Although our child has many more allergies, including soy, wheat, millet, rye, and oats, we have been able to eat the Erewhon Cereals without incident for many years. As always, my allergies are not your allergies, so read ingredients every time you go to the store.

This blurb was sent to me from the company:

Erewhon gluten free cereals are made in a dedicated peanut-free, tree nut-free, dairy-free, and egg-free facility. Our cereals are certified by GIG and made on a shared line with other products that have gluten in them. The machinery is thoroughly washed down in between production runs and the cereal is tested after it’s made to ensure it has less than 10ppm of gluten.

Three cereals were sent to me by the company. We tried the Erewhon Cocoa Crispy Brown Rice, the Erewhon Corn Flakes and the (Gluten-Free) Erewhon Brown Rice Crisps – note: they have Brown Rice Crisps that contain gluten, so don’t forget to check the label. Our teen enjoyed the Cocoa Crisps and we were able to work it into our breakfast rotation. My husband and I enjoyed the corn flakes, which are smaller than other brands, but just as sweet without a lot of added sugar. They also work well in my other recipes for gluten-free allergen-free fried chicken.

For the longest time our child could not have any refined sugar, so she basically lived off of the Erewhon Brown Rice Crisps, which only contain 3 ingredients: brown rice, brown rice syrup and sugar. A cereal does not get much more simple than that. I applaud Attune Foods for not changing that recipe over the years.

We had discovered a corn allergy, which our child then outgrew. Erewhon Corn Flakes only contain organic milled corn and salt. These are perfect for all of us now, and especially for my husband who has recently lost forty pounds. Imagine his excitement that I already had all the foods in the house that he needed to keep him on his path.

If you haven’t already tried Erewhon cereals and are wondering where to find them – they are available at most health food stores, or at major supermarkets in the health food aisles, and if you don’t see them, ask!
