As the mom to a child with multiple food allergies, I’ve learned how to live, cook, eat and think without milk, eggs, wheat, gluten, soy, tree nuts, peanuts and many other every day foods. I’ve not only become an awesome cook and baker, but also an advocate for parents and kids with food allergies and asthma. I run the Brooklyn Food Allergy Caregiver support group, and am Board Chair for Kids With Food Allergies and on the national board of directors for Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). In my business life, I am CEO of Numodo (www.numodo.com), and assist my husband with managing his career as a jazz pianist, composer, presenter and technician. Email me with ideas, quips or posts you’d like to see: bklynallergymom [at] gmail [dot] com. And if you live in or ever get to Brooklyn, please join us! – Heidi Bayer

Found your site because I was so angry when I was watching the recent Chopped episode when they made that chef cook with seafood when he was allergic. It seems like they could have chosen some other random ingredients. Your website it fantastic.
Chef Kelvin Fernandez performed admirably with a smile on his face and he won in that category without being able to taste the food! That is a testament to his character. I’m glad you found us.
Hi Heidi,
Great site! so glad to have found it via my colleague Jennifer Kilian.
I have a highly allergic child and while she is not gluten-free she is dairy-free but has a severe allergy to apples and pears (related to her tree allergy) and most vegan sweet recipes call for applesauce. Any recommendations?
Thanks!
Alison
I’m so happy you found me! Apple was a very bad allergy for our child for many years. Can your child eat bananas? If so, adding a very ripe mashed banana to a recipe in place of applesauce will do the trick. Other options depending on the recipe is a small cooked mashed sweet potato or, 1-2 jars of organic baby prunes.
Hi Heidi,

Hello!
I’m working on a school project dealing with food allergies and eating out, and was wondering if you’d be willing to answer a few quick questions for me. They are attached at the bottom of this message. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Best,

QUESTIONS
1. What’s the most important thing for a person with food allergies when eating out?
2. What have you found to be the best method in finding a restaurant that will accommodate your allergies?
3. Do you feel that it is more difficult to find a restaurant that will accommodate you, or to communicate the seriousness of your allergies to the restaurant staff once you are there?
4. What is your method for finding a place to eat when you’re already out and can’t plan ahead, or when you’re in a new area and can’t eat at one of your go-to spots?
5. Any other thoughts you think might be helpful in my research?
Take a look at this segment I directed on eating out with food allergies featuring Allergic Girl Sloane Miller:

Great advice an great blog! I am also living with seve allergies and I am always searching for new tips and tricks
Thanks and keep reading as I’ll keep reading yours!
Hi Heidi,
Thanks for the follow. Compared to your child, I feel like such a lightweight with my lactose intolerance and gastritis, dietary issues I chose to ignore for far too long. Is your spawn also allergic to cats? I sure am!
Best,
V
Well, spawn she is, and yes, cat allergic. However, web both do a lot of cat “sitting” which has helped build our immunities so our severity is much less than it was. Child hopes to be a cat lady upon moving out of our household. Such a lofty goal!
